FAQ On 3G Modems

By

Computers and modems can be confusing. We have many answers to some of your top questions right here! Let's take a look at them.

What Is A 3G Modem?
A 3G modem is a device that permits a PC or a laptop to connect to the internet. This modem connects wirelessly to the internet through a GSM/CDMA or UMTS network. It provides a speed that generally processes at three hundred Kbits per second, which is considered a "high-speed internet connection." With this device, you can access the internet wherever you are.

What Does A 3G Modem Look Like?
It is available most often in the form of a device that plugs into one of your computer's USB spaces. Within the device is a SIM card which has the user information that allows access by authentication. Also in this external device is an antenna for signal reception and the modem itself, which changes the wireless information into language your computer can interpret.

What Is The Difference Between A 3G And The Broadband Connection In Your Home?
One prominent difference is download capability. Broadband allows you unlimited downloading. Three G, however, is limited to anywhere from 250MB up to 5GB per month. To have access to more than 5GB is very rare. You will have to be selective about your use of the device, especially if you have the 250MB capability for downloading. Once you have reached your limit, you may be denied access for the remainder of that month or you may have the option of paying for additional use.

Where Can I Get This Modem?
Basically any internet provider offers a 3G modem to anyone who wants it. There is a monthly fee attached for the use of this convenience. Among the providers, these prices may vary so it behooves you to check out several before you purchase one.

Are There Computers That Have 3G Already Built In?
Yes, some computers come equipped with the 3G modem. Many people prefer having this technology installed in their laptop, or cell phone, especially if your work demands much travel. It may be comforting for you not having to worry about leaving your external modem behind when you leave a hotel room. The built-in modem gives your laptop a cleaner look. However, it does have the drawback of only being available to that one laptop in which it is an integral part. The external modems can be used for several different gadgets, such as your cell phone as well as for different laptops in your family.

Can My Modem Accept SIM Cards From Another Provider?
No, at least not readily. When you contract for your modem, your chosen network will supply you with a modem that is locked with their own configurations. You may be able to unlock it for use with another service provider by contacting online services that specialize in unlocking such modems. When this is successful, you will be able to use a SIM card from another network and use it in your device.
